ADHD Assessment

ADHD Assessment

Unfortunately, there is no test for ADHD, being a psychological disorder, ADHD is a group of symptoms and difficulties that may be more severe or extreme for a group of individuals. To work out if someone has ADHD; I complete a ADHD assessment which tests those symptoms and their severity.

Also crucial is a thorough review of an individual’s development (e.g. childhood illnesses, school history, family patterns, trauma history), as well as measures to work out how an individual is functioning cognitively. Because ADHD can look a lot like other psychological disorders, it is also vital to complete a thorough assessment of all psychological problems (such as anxiety and mood problems).

This process of assessment is not quick. But because ADHD is a developmental problem, it should be thorough and include information from other people (partner, parent, school report). It would be wise to be wary of any ‘diagnosis’ of ADHD that is given without a thorough process like the one above.
